MRI is regarded as a safe imaging modality, but it does pose significant safety risks for patients who have implanted devices, owing to the constant strong magnetic field used in MRI, as well as the time-varying gradient magnetic fields and radiofrequency magnetic fields that are used to create the images [1-3]. Patients with implanted devices often can be scanned safely if special precautions are taken during the MRI. However, scanning in the presence of unrecognized MRI-unsafe implanted devices, or without special precautions, can lead to serious injury or death [4-6].
