Reducing Radiation Exposure Without Compromising Image Quality for Lumbar Spine CT PDF Print E-mail

According to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, medical radiation is now the second largest source of radiation, accounting for 36% of total exposure. This increased contribution from medical procedures is due in large part to the explosion of CT scans in the past 25 years. Although the number of nuclear medicine studies has tripled, the number of CT scans has increased more than twentyfold [1]. In light of the heightened awareness of radiation’s cancer-causing potential and the dramatic increase in the number of CT studies, minimizing radiation exposure is a paramount objective in radiology.
